Several Congressional Black Caucus members have spoken about the crisis in Texas.
Representative Joyce Beatty released the following statement:
"I want to express my concern regarding reports of an urgent humanitarian crisis for tens of thousands of displaced Haitians at our Southern border. I want to be clear that we are a nation of humanity and rule of law. My heart aches for the people of Haiti, who are currently experiencing unimaginable political and economic upheaval. As we address the current surge of Haitian people, it is critical that we approach the situation focused on fairness and the safety of all involved. I will continue to fight to see that refugees are welcome in America, regardless of race or country of origin."
"I have contacted Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to request that he immediately assess the situation and ensure that humanitarian assistance, including lavatory facilities, food, and water, is being provided to those being processed, especially children. I have further requested that he provide a comprehensive briefing to the Congressional Black Caucus on the status of Haitian migrants and on whether alternatives exist for their relocation."
Florida Representative Val Demings also issued this statement about immigration reform in the country:
"Immigration reform to protect DREAMers, Florida farmers, TPS recipients, and essential workers is critical for our economy and our future. The Senate must move forward, and they should do so with the understanding that in a democracy, the majority should be able to pass legislation to serve the American people.
"However, let’s also be clear that we are only in this situation because inexcusable obstruction by Senate Republicans has nearly shut down Congress’ ability to work for the American people. The Senate must find alternate pathways to complete this work, and every Senate Republican should be held accountable for opposing immigration reforms that will protect workers, add an estimated $1.5 trillion to our economy and create 400,000 new jobs."
