Yonkers, NY) – On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Senator Shelley Mayer will hold the 2021 Women’s History Month Celebration virtually to recognize exceptional women who selflessly gave back to their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. After reviewing numerous nominees from both lawmakers Senate Districts, which included outstanding community organizers, activists, educators, entrepreneurs, and healthcare professionals – the following women were selected: Phyllis Shelton, New Rochelle; Shih-Ying Sun, Dobbs Ferry; Dara Gruenberg, Scarsdale; Jeanhee Chung, Mamaroneck; Shari Matusow & Valerie Sloan, Armonk; and Jeni Wallace, Yonkers. These seven inspiring women will be awarded NYS Senate proclamations by Stewart-Cousins and Mayer and will be guest speakers at Tuesday’s celebration. In addition, Stewart-Cousins’ and Mayer’s 2020 nominees: Esmeralda Hoscoy, Yonkers, Regional Director Catholic Charities; Jeanne Newman, Hastings-on-Hudson, Founder and Executive Director, Share the Project; Melvina Lathan, Ardsley, Former Director of Youth Services, Police Athletic League of Yonkers; Barbara Davis, New Rochelle, City Historian; Jirandy Martinez, Mamaroneck, Executive Director, Community Resource Center; Terri McNair, Bedford, Secretary, Antioch Baptist Church, will be recognized with a special video tribute, since COVID-19 prevented a formal in-person event last year.
