King Richard is getting a lot of press, but the press is not always great. Also, there are some critics of the Will Smith movie who claim that Richard Williams was nobody’s hero.
I want to talk about #KingRichard from a black man’s perspective and explain why there is no case in which a black man can be featured in a film about fatherhood without being undermined somewhere along the way.
But some outlets like NPR are giving King Richard proper due:
"King Richard is a sports movie about the early days of superstar tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams. But, as its title suggests, the film focuses on their demanding and ambitious father, Richard Williams. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the movie stars Will Smith as a man who’ll do anything to get his daughters from Compton to Wimbledon."
