Baltimore native Maimouna Youssef is of Choctaw, African American, and Muslim heritage who was born into a family of exceptional artists deeply rooted in healing, spirituality and activism. She began singing traditional indigenous and African songs at four years old and began her music career at 16 years ol. Maimouna Youssef aka Mumu Fresh is a Grammy-nominated singer, emcee, songwriter, activist, mentor, and workshop facilitator making waves in the international Indie music scene evolving from the historical musical trajectory of Miriam Makeba and Nina Simone.

The resulting genre-spanning musical style is one that seamlessly marries her various influences with spiritually-infused, often socially conscious lyrics. If you want proof check out her 2018 NPR Tiny Desk featuring her alter rap ego Mumu Fresh or her social justice anthem to the Mothers of the Black Lives Movement with her 2019 Black Girls Rock performance, “Say My Name’. And if that was not enough vibe to her latest 2021 revolutionary collaboration of ‘Tunday Fiyah’,a continued call for social justice.AFRICA400Wednesdays 2-3pm EST.
